Call for compositions

As a part of the  Beethoven Festival in Vienna we invite your ensemble to participate in the composition competition. The participating orchestras ensembles are encouraged to submit a commissioned piece. Please find below the details of the competition:

 

Competition Rules: Orchestras participating in the Beethoven 2020 project are invited to commission, rehearse and perform a new piece for orchestra.

  1. The composer must:
    be a citizen of the country from which the orchestra originates
    be 18-30 years
    be the sole creator of the composition
    generate the score and parts using either Sibelius or Finale software


  2. The composition must:
    be minimum 5 minutes and maximum 6 minutes in duration
    be for orchestra, minimum instrumentation: 2.2.2.2 - 2.2 - timpani - strings
    demonstrate an understanding of and relationship to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, particularly the development of musical motifs
    use the orchestra effectively


  3. The Orchestra is entirely responsible for the selection, rehearsal and performance of the composition


  4. The Performance in Vienna must be the World Premiere of the composition


  5. The Submission, to be considered for the prize must be made:
    as a PDF full score generated using either Sibelius or Finale software, a4 or a3 size, portrait orientation
    with an mp3 sound file (EITHER: recorded in rehearsal with the orchestra  OR  generated in Sibelius or Finale using MIDI/sampled sounds)
    with a certified scan of the composer’s passport or other valid identification showing citizenship and date of birth
    with a certified statement signed by the composer that the piece is entirely his/her own original work
    by email only
    by the closing date: 31 January 2020


  6. The Prize of €800 will be:
    decided by a jury of no fewer than 3 international experts headed by Mr David Slater
    based on the submitted score and recording, and the live performance of the work in Vienna
    awarded at the final concert of the Beethoven 2020 project in Vienna
    according to the following criteria:
    adherence to points 1. and 2. Above
    understanding of and relationship to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, particularly the development of musical motifs
    effective use of the orchestra
